Akwaeke's adult debut, Freshwater, was named to the National Book Foundation's 5 Under 35 list, was a long-list nominee for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence, and was a short-list nominee for the Center for Fiction's First Novel Award. The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker, and the Los Angeles Times, among others, praised the autobiographical novel, which also garnered starred ratings from Library Journal and Booklist.
