Alan Taylor, a native of Maine, is an American and Canadian history professor at the University of Virginia. The Divided Ground, Writing Early American History, American Colonies, and William Cooper's Town, which earned the Bancroft and Pulitzer prizes for American history, are among his works. He also contributes to The New Republic as a contributing editor.
