Alev Croutier was born in the country of Turkey. She has written and directed award-winning indie films, including Tell Me a Riddle, for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship (the first ever for a screenplay). Harem: The World Beyond the Veil, her international success, is her first book. She spends time in both San Francisco and Paris.
