Alexis D Tocqueville

Alexis D Tocqueville
His most famous publications were Democracy in America (1835 and 1840, in two volumes) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856). In both, he looked at how people's living standards and social situations have improved in Western cultures, as well as their relationship to the market and the state. Tocqueville was active in French politics, first during the July Monarchy (1830-48) and later during the Second Republic (1849-51) that followed the February 1848 Revolution. Democracy in America was published following Tocqueville's travels in the United States and is now considered an early work of sociology and political science.
