Betsy Maestro was born in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York. Maestro always wanted to be a teacher, and she spent her high school summer vacations babysitting, teaching, and even supervising playgrounds, inspired by her mother, who taught nursery school and went on to be a school guidance counselor and administrator. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State College with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's degree in Elementary Guidance. Maestro taught kindergarten and first grade for 11 years, during which time she saw the importance of imaginative nonfiction in piqueing children's interest. After marrying artist Giulio Maestro in 1972, Maestro decided to try her hand at writing. Since then, the duo has worked together on more than 50 children's books, all of which are picture books, with many of them being nonfiction and concept books.
For their efforts, they have garnered various accolades and citations. Betsy Maestro enjoys reading, cooking, photography, travel, art, and antiques when she is not writing. She and her husband live in Old Lyme, Connecticut, with their two children.
