Carla Emery was a woman, mother of seven, homeschooler, goat-keeper, garden-grower, writer, and country-living educator who spent more than thirty years on a farm in Idaho. During the early 1970s, she wrote and self-published the first editions of The Encyclopedia of Country Living while concurrently running her School of Country Living. Carla traveled around the country to promote her self-published versions, appearing on shows including The Mike Douglas Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Phil Donahue Show, and Good Morning America, where she showed country-living skills like goat-milking, bread-making, and butter-churning. Carla continued to travel the country promoting and selling the book, as well as teaching the timeless techniques of country living, when Sasquatch Books published the 9th Edition of Encyclopedia in 1994. Carla acquired a sizable and devoted fan base across the country. Carla died in the year 2005.
