Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Carlton Smith was an award-winning journalist for The Los Angeles Times and The Seattle Times. He was a Pulitzer Prize nominee in 1988 for investigative reporting and now works full-time as a true crime novelist. He currently resides in San Francisco.
