Christof Thoenes (1928-2018) earned his doctorate in Berlin after studying art history in Berlin and Pavia. Thoenes worked at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institute) in Rome for many years and was an Honorary Professor in Hamburg. He was a contributor through a number of books on Italian art, especially architecture and architectural thought from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
