Demi is the bestselling author of over 130 children's books, including The Wonderful Adventures of Krishna, Shiva, Mahavira, Our Lady of Guadalupe's Gifts, and Talking to God. Around half a million copies of her books have been sold. Former First Lady Barbara Bush chose The Empty Pot as one of the books to be read on the ABC Radio Network's Mrs. Bush's Book Club in 1990. The Children's Literacy Initiative sponsored Bush's Story Time. Demi's book Gandhi won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award and was awarded a New York Times Best Illustrated Book.

In the United States, major exhibitions of her work have been held at the Time/Life Gallery in New York, the Botolph Galleries in Boston and Cambridge, and the Los Angeles County Museum. Demi was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to India, and she also represented the United States. In 1992, she attended the First International Children's Book Conference in Beijing, China. She and her spouse live in Yarrow Point, Washington.
