Emily Arnold McCully was born in Galesburg, Illinois, which is also the hometown of poet Carl Sandburg, Emily's father's friend and mentor, and the subject of many of her early portrait sketches. Emily doodled, sketched, and wrote her own stories as a child in Garden City, New York, binding them into books with their own copyright pages. She was hired to design posters, backgrounds, and programs for concerts and plays as a class artist in school. Despite her love in sketching, Emily chose to attend Pembroke College (now Brown University) instead of art school. She was a singer and performer who was also a co-author of the yearly college musical.

Emily pursued various jobs in the realm of commercial art after graduating. Emily's first children's book was commissioned in 1966 after a children's book editor noticed a series of marketing posters she had designed.
