EMILY WINFIELD MARTIN creates fantastic worlds and characters by sketching, painting, and sewing. The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer is her first book, which she also illustrated. The Black Apple, her boutique, has been featured in national magazines and on television shows such as the New York Times and The Martha Stewart Show. Emily got the idea for Oddfellow's Orphanage, her first children's book, from the real I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Oddfellows), dancing bears, ragtime music, and various forms of magic and mysticism. Emily began by painting pictures of the children and people at the fictitious orphanage, and stories arose from the portraits--enough to fill a book!
