Ernest J Gaines
Ernest Gaines was born on a plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, near New Roads, which serves as the fictional Bayonne in all of his writings. He is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's emeritus writer-in-residence. Gaines was awarded the John D. Catherine T. and Catherine T. For his lifetime achievements, he was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
He was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest honor, in 1996. Oscar, Louisiana is where he and his wife, Dianne, call home.
