Eugen Herrigel

Between the wars, Eugen Herrigel was a German philosopher who taught at the University of Tokyo. In his quest to become a Zen mystic, he immersed himself in the doctrine and practice of Zen Buddhism for six years, putting himself through the rigorous discipline of training with a Zen Master. The story of this encounter is Zen in the Art of Archery, and his The Way of Zen is also available through Vintage Books. In 1955, Professor Herrigel passed away.
