Eva Ibbotson was an Austrian-born British novelist best known for her children's books. She was born Maria Charlotte Michelle Wiesner on January 21, 1925, and died on October 20, 2010. In recent years, some of her adult novels have been effectively reprinted for the young adult market. She won the Smarties Award in the category 9-11 years for her historical novel Voyage to the River Sea (Macmillan, 2001), was a runner-up for the Guardian Prize, and reached the Carnegie, Whitbread, and Blue Peter shortlists. At the time of her death, she was a finalist for the 2010 Guardian Prize. The Abominables, her most recent work, was one of eight on the longlist for the same award in 2012.
