In the year 1898, Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany. He spent a lot of his childhood painting animals at the city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo. Hans and his wife, Margret, rode their bicycles out of Paris in 1940, carrying the manuscript for the first Curious George book with them. They moved to the United States and released Curious George in 1941.
