James McFarlane is of Scottish ancestry and comes from a working-class Catholic family. He received his education at a secondary modern school and spent the majority of his formative years as a wastrel before enrolling in a skill course and eventually becoming a qualified electrician. He's a philosopher, and he's an obsessive type of philosopher. He's an unusual fellow, as are all original thinkers. As a result, there will be no traditional marriage or children.
