John Flanagan aspired to be a writer as a child in Sydney, Australia, and after a successful career in advertising and television, he began creating a series of short stories for his son, Michael, to encourage him to read. The Ruins of Gorlan, Book 1 of the Ranger's Apprentice epic, was born from those stories. John Flanagan's works have sold millions of copies and made readers all over the world, thanks to his companion series, Brotherband Chronicles. Flanagan and his wife live in the Manly suburbs of Australia. They have two grown daughters and four grandsons in addition to their son.
