John Gauntner is regarded as the foremost non-Japanese sake expert in the world. He is well-known among sake brewers and others in the sake industry as a long-time resident of Japan. For many years, he authored the Nihonshu Column in the Japan Times before writing a weekly sake column in Japanese for the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's and the world's most widely circulated Japanese daily. John got the Sake Samurai award for the first time in 2006, the first year it was given out. He's written five books about sake.
