Joseph Brown

Joseph Epes Brown (1920-2000) was an American academic whose lifelong commitment to Native American religious traditions paved the way for the study of these traditions in higher education. His book, The Sacred Pipe, is based on his conversations with Black Elk, a Lakota holy man. Brown claimed that he traveled among numerous plains tribes, and that after visiting the old Sioux priest Black Elk, he was requested to record the account of his ancient religion that he should give me. This book, in my opinion, is his effort and contribution to the Sioux.
