Jules Verne

Jules Verne

Many regard Jules Verne (1828-1905) to be the father of science fiction. He was born in Nantes, France, and studied law before turning to composing opera libretti until 1863, when he published the first of his Amazing Voyages series, Five Weeks in a Balloon. Because of its success, he went on to write a number of classic and prophetic science fiction novels, including Journey to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Several scientific and technological advances, such as the submarine, television, and space travel, were predicted in his writings.
