Michael Hamburger was born in Berlin in 1924 and immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1933 as a child. He is the finest translator of German poetry into English, having worked with many authors like Holderlin, Celan, Rilke, and Goethe, as well as one of Britain's outstanding poets of the postwar period.
