Michael Powell

Since 2007, Michael Powell has worked as a writer for the New York Times, and since 2014, he has been a columnist for Sports of The Times. From 1996 to 2006, he worked for the Washington Post, where he covered the 2000 presidential campaign and then became the New York bureau chief. He's been a part of Pulitzer Prize-winning and Polk Award-winning teams. Powell started his career at the Burlington Free Press in 1984 and has since worked for the Bergen Record, New York Newsday, and the New York Observer. He earned his master's degree in journalism from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism in 1984 after studying American and African history at SUNY Purchase College and working as a tenant activist in East Flatbush.

Powell has two boys with his wife. They live in Brooklyn's Ditmas Park.
