Nikolai  Gogol

Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) rose to prominence as a short story writer, and his satirical play The Government Inspector caused such a stir in 1836 that Gogol fled Russia to live in exile in Rome. In his final years, religious frenzy contributed to his early death in Moscow.
