Phil, who was raised in a California coastal town by a Japanese mother and a Jewish-American father, discovered spoken word poetry when he was 17 years old. In fifteen nations, he has played in hundreds of locations. Phil was invited to perform alongside His Holiness The Dalai Lama at his 80th birthday celebration in 2015. His work has been featured in media venues ranging from NPR to Al Jazeera America to Upworthy.com, and has been viewed over 10 million times online. Phil is the co-director of Project VOICE and a Brown University graduate.
