Seiichi Makino

Seiichi Makino earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. In 1968, he received his bachelor's degree in linguistics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He is a well-known Japanese linguist and scholar who is well-known for his scholarship and numerous publications all over the world. He taught Japanese language, linguistics, and culture at the University of Illinois while also teaching lower level language coordinators before starting at Princeton University in 1991. He is an experienced ACTFL Japanese oral proficiency trainer who regularly trains Japanese educators around the world in proficiency-oriented training and the administration of the Oral Proficiency Interview.

Professor Makino has served as the Academic Director of the Japanese Pedagogy M.A. program from its inception. Since 1996, Columbia University has hosted a summer program.
