Maurice Sendak's children's books have been translated into over 40 languages and have sold over 30 million copies. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1964 for Where the Wild Things Are, and other books include In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and Higglety Pigglety Pop! In 1970, he was awarded the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration, in 1983, the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, and in 1996, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his contribution to the arts in America. In 2003, Sendak received the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Prize, a Swedish government-sponsored yearly worldwide prize for children's literature.
