Shunju Aono was born in the prefecture of Ibaraki. He won the 45th Chiba Tetsuya Prize in the Newcomers category for Young Magazine in 2001, although his work was never published. He won the 17th Ikkiman IKKI rookies prize in 2005 and made his breakthrough with Somato (Kaleidoscope) in 2006.
