The Body is Not An Excuse, founded by Sonya Renee Taylor, is an international movement and organization dedicated to radical self-love and bodily empowerment as a basic instrument for social justice and global transformation. Sonya's work as a multi-award winning Performance Poet, Activist, and Transformational Leader has a global impact. Sonya is a former National and International poetry slam champion, author, educator, and activist who has wowed audiences in prisons, mental health treatment facilities, homeless shelters, universities, festivals, and public schools around the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, England, Scotland, Canada, and the Netherlands, as well as in prisons, mental health treatment facilities, homeless shelters, universities, festivals, and public schools. In September 2015, she was acknowledged as a YBCA 100, an annual compilation of creative minds, makers, and pioneers who are asking the questions and generating the provocations that will influence the future of American culture; an honor she shared with novelist Ta'Nahesi Coates, artist Kara Walker, and filmmaker Ava DuVernay. Sonya has appeared on HBO, BET, MTV, TV One, NPR, PBS, CNN, Oxygen Network, The New York Times, New York Magazine, MSNBC.com, Today.com, Huffington Post, Vogue Australia, Shape.com, Magazine, and many more outlets. Planned Parenthood, Advocates for Youth 1in3 Campaign, Association for Size Diversity and Health, Binge Eating Disorders Association (BEDA), Yerba Buena Cultural Art Center, and others are among her many collaborators and artists. With a B.A. in hand, you're ready to take on the world.
with a B.A. in Sociology and an M.S.A. Sonya continues to be a powerful supporter and activist for intersectional, global justice in Organizational Management. She is currently a member of the Split This Rock Board of Directors, an organization that encourages poets to take more active roles in public life and fosters a nationwide network of socially engaged poets. She also serves on the SisterSong Board of Directors, a groundbreaking Women of Color reproductive justice organization.
She is also involved in the Black Lives Matter movement and the Anti-Police Terror Project in Oakland, California. Sonya established The Body is Not An Excuse, an international movement and organization dedicated to radical self-love and body empowerment, in 2011. The Body is Not An Apology entered the digital technology realm in 2015, establishing a comprehensive tech platform to connect people all over the world around topics of radical self-love and intersectional social justice. The online platform of The Body is Not An Apologies, www.thebodyisnotanapology.com, includes a digital magazine, radical education web-based courses, a social networking site, and online forums.
With visitors from over 140 countries, TBINAA's content reaches over 250,000 thousand people per week. Sonya currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her Yorkie, Anastasia Duchess, but she continues to travel the world doing talks, workshops, and performances about radical unapologetic healing and personal transformation.
