Since 1982, naturalist and author Wildman Steve Brill has led public foraging trips in parks across the greater New York region. From March to December, he works with schools, day camps, environmental organizations, museums, parks departments, nature centers, scouts, garden clubs, and educational farms. His book Recognizing and Gathering Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not-So-Wild) Areas (HarperCollins Publishers, 1994) is considered a classic on the subject. His self-published book, Shoots and Greens of Early Spring in Northeastern North America (self-published 1986 and 2008), explains how the foraging season begins, and his Foraging With the Wildman video series, as well as the website he built, demonstrate how it's done. But he'll always be remembered for being handcuffed and jailed by undercover New York City park officers in Central Park for eating a dandelion!
