J. Stuart Showalter, JD, MFS, has spent most of his career dealing with health law issues. He has a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a master's degree in forensic science from George Washington University in Washington, DC. He served in the US Navy from 1972 to 1980 in various positions, including as in-house counsel to the US Navy Surgeon General.

From 1980 to 1996, Mr. Showalter was vice president and in-house counsel to the CatholicHealth Association of the United States headquartered in St. Louis. From 1996 to 1998 he was a partner in a St. Louis law firm, where he specialized in health law and corporate compliance.
