Tressie McMillan Cottom worked at two for-profit institutions in the enrollment department. She left the for-profit educational business to study it in graduate school after witnessing the kinds of choices pupils confront. She's now a sociology assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has written for Slate and contributed to the Washington Post and the Atlantic online.
