Virginia Nicholson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and studied at Cambridge University. She grew up in Yorkshire and Sussex. She lived in France and Italy before working for the BBC as a documentary researcher. Her publications include the acclaimed social histories Among the Bohemians, Singled Out, Millions Like Us, and Perfect Wives in Ideal Houses, and she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She lives in Sussex with her husband and three grown children.
