The Ralston Purina firm was started in St. Louis by William H. Danforth (1870-1955). In 1894, the city of St. Louis, Missouri, was founded. Danforth's own vision of a balanced four-square living, including life's physical, mental, social, and religious dimensions, inspired the company's checkerboard emblem.
