Woody King Jr.'s New Plays for the Black Theatre WOODIE KING, JR.'S NEW PLAYS FOR THE BLACK THEATRE WOODIE KING, JR.'S NEW In 1970, in New York City, he launched the New Federal Theatre and the National Black Touring Circuit. Since then, King has produced and directed productions on and off Broadway, as well as at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Cleveland Playhouse, Center Stage of Baltimore, and the Pittsburgh Public Theatre, among others. Over the years, his work has garnered him numerous nominations and honors, including a 1988 NAACP Image Award for his direction of Checkmates and a 1993 Audelco Award for Best Director and Best Play for Robert Johnson: Trick The Devil. An Obie Award for Persistent Excellence was also given to King.

He holds a degree of fine arts from the College of Wooster and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Wayne State University. King has written for a number of publications, including Black World, Variety, and The Tulane Drama Review, as well as contributing to a number of periodicals.
