Home Tonight: Further Reflections On The Parable Of The Prodigal Son
Book Overview
Inspired by Rembrandt's famous painting The Return of the Prodigal Son, Henri Nouwen embarked on a long spiritual journey in search of the place within where God has chosen to dwell. He shared his deeply personal meditations in The Return of the Prodigal Son, a spiritual classic that interweaves elements of art history, memoir, midrash, and self-help. It has sold more than 300,000 copies and its popularity continues to rise ten years after its original publication.
RETURNING: REFLECTIONS ON THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON grew out of a series of lectures Nouwen presented as he immersed himself further in the desire to understand and embrace the meaning of the father's challenge to love his son and the son's challenge to receive that love. In thoughtful, incisive analyses of each character, Nouwen brings the parable to life and brilliantly illuminates the nature of what it means to love and to be loved.
Elegantly packaged and affordably priced, RETURNING: REFLECTIONS ON THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON is the perfect holiday gift for readers familiar with Nouwen's writings (more than two million copies of his books are currently in print), as well as those discovering his ageless wisdom for the first time.

Henri Nouwen's book, "Home Tonight? : Further Reflections on The Parable of the Prodigal Son" is exactly that, more insight and more thoughtful reflections on the author's use of Rembrandt's painting, "The Return of the Prodigal Son" as a means for Nouwen and us, his readers to discover for ourselves, our spiritual home. The book is written to emulate Mr. Nouwen's workshops on the same subject. The reader is invited to share in Nouwen's own personal struggles and to work through our own past, present and future through listening, journaling and communing. This book is more intimate, more honest and more personal than his first book on this subject and thus more challenging to the reader if we are join Henri on his journey of self-reflection toward our own place of "home" which is with our first love, the love of God. The author cautions us throughout his text that we often and frequently get caught or trapped in searching for home by looking to the love of others. Ultimately that does not lead to our need for feeling of comfort and home. The author challenges his reader to return to the painting of the prodigal and to not only reflect more deeply on the painting but to imagine ourselves as the actual subjects in the painting. How do we, as we journey to home, reflect the characters of the prodigal, the elder brother and ultimately the father? The author's personal approach to Rembrandt's characters and yet deeply personal story is worth the time and personal investment to delve into the truly examined life as reflected by Rembrandt's painting and thus a life reflective of our "first love," the love as shared through a relationship with the Creator: Father, Son and Spirit.
