Book Overview

Teaching is art-creation-and a curriculum map is only as good as the teacher who considers it, who questions it, and who revises it to meet the needs of each year's students. -Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle

Two teachers. Two classrooms.
One school year.

180 Days represents the collaboration of two master teachers-Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle-over an entire school year: planning, teaching, and reflecting within their own and each other's classrooms in California and New Hampshire. Inspired by a teacher's question, How do you fit it all in? they identified and prioritized the daily, essential, belief-based practices that are worth spending time on. They asked, Who will these students be as readers and writers after a year under our care?

What we make time for matters: what we plan, how we revise our plans while teaching, and how we reflect and decide what's next. The decision-making in the moment is the most essential work of teaching, and it's the ongoing study of the adolescents in front of us that has the greatest impact on our thinking.

With both the demands of time and the complexity of diverse students in mind, Kelly and Penny mapped out a year of engaging literacy practices aligned to their core beliefs about what matters most. They share their insights on managing time and tasks and offer teaching strategies for engaging students Read More chevron_right

   Incredible
An essential tool for understanding the adolescent mind and behavior on engaging and encouraging them to read and write. It is helpful for teachers to prevent burnout and to be effective leaders for future writers and readers.

Engage and connect with your students.
During the pandemic, I was seriously questioning my profession and if it was something I wanted to continue. Like many teachers and students, I was burned out on distance learning and frustrated with my lack of connections and relationships with children and colleagues. I have taken so much from it that I implement in my classroom and I know that the relationships with my students will be stronger and better than they ever have. Gallagher and Kittle give you an insight into their classrooms and what has been successful for them. It is a great starting point for understanding how to allocate time for reading, writing and student conferences. This book is a read that I highly recommend for any English teacher.

   Love this book!
I don 't know an English teacher who is not a fan of Penny Kittle or Kelly Gallagher. The fact that these two have teamed up to write this book makes my day just a little more. Although I bought and read last summer, I wanted to be sure to leave a review. Summer reading for all English teachers -- highly recommended!

t like to write and those obstacles have largely disappeared in ...
This is by far the most useful book I have ever found for an English teacher, struggling with basic curriculum issues. I adapted it and transformed my classes into communities of learners-I teach in a small Chicago Public High School with many students who do not read habitually and who don 't. Like to write and these obstacles have almost disappeared in the first month and half of the school. The key is to break your class into small chunks, each of which brings one of your entire curriculum strands on a daily basis.

More thinking from two influential teachers
If you've read other Kittle and Gallagher, you will find here nothing vastly different from what you'd expect from them. It is interesting to see how they approach planning together and as always inspiring to hear their perspectives on literacy. I liked it, but it did not feel like new thinking. Mind you, I read all their previous work.

What do I teach? How do I decide? How do I engage and empower students?
These questions are answered by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle. They demonstrate how to organize with your values and your knowledge of students to begin your reading and writing instruction. It is not easy. , yet it is possible TOTALLY. The book includes text, pictures and videos that SHOW you daily schedules, yearly plans for reading, annual plans for writing, considerations for planning, how to assess more student work and specific plans for narrative, information, and multigenre research projects.
