Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers . . . But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves. --The New York Times Book Review

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 --Q is for 'question mark.' A world that bears a question. Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly Read More chevron_right

The Crowning Achievement of Murakami's Oeuvre
This book is the best of everything. An enjoyable experience to read. The characters are not perfect. The love story is unforgettable. The narrative is not straight forward. The next chapter of this book will make you want to read it again. It's a bit long, but worth it.

   Another great story!
This is the third novel that I have read by the author. The way he tells the story from alternating characters is very interesting. The world and settings he creates are beautiful, and the detail and history he goes into with each of his characters is impressive. It is long, but it must be to understand the characters. I would recommend the 3 volume set over the single novel because it's easier to hold for a long time.

   kept me interested
His other books have many of the same themes. It reads the same as well. One would come away from Wild Sheep Chase with a similar perspective and vision, but this was still smart and enjoyable to read. I could have continued to read if he had made it longer.

Writing just does not get better than this.
I usually don't read fiction that falls into the fantasy category, but I gave this a try because I thought it was a good read. I read in a review that this isn't the place to start with Murakam, but I jumped right in. Although I enjoyed it, I didn't have to go back to refresh myself as to story or character. You never lose the thread of the story because Murikami leaves what amounts to bread crumbs all the way. He doesn't write to the reader. I have read many of his books. He will become one of the greats.

   Great
This one is better than Wild Sheep Chase and Wind Up Bird Chronicle. His imagination is mind warp.

   Very Sci-Fi
My nephew ordered this item for Christmas and it was exactly what he wanted. There were a couple of choices I could make on Amazon. My nephew said that he picked the right one.

My favorite author for good reason
I want to read all his books after I finish this work of art. It's engaging and exciting, I flew through all 3 books quickly. If you haven't read before, this is a wonderful story.

   Beautiful boxset
One of the most beautiful book sets I have ever seen is this one. The quality of the paper is excellent, and the idea to divide the novel in 3 volumes is genius.
