Book Overview

Whether you're a beginning knitter or advanced, whether your tastes range from simple knit-purl stitching to fancy Daisy or Moroccan screen, this dictionary of stitch patterns is indispensable

Young knitters, old knitters, hip knitters, traditional knitters: they all enjoy different styles. But every knitter from age 5 to 95 needs a good dictionary of stitches. 400 Knitting Stitches is a comprehensive guide that invites knitters to experiment with a variety of new stitch combinations. The book is conveniently divided into eight categories: knit-purl, crossed and cables, slipped, lacy, double, twisted, cast-off, and fancy stitches. Making a romantic lacy wrap or a classic cable sweater? Whatever your style, there's a stitch in here for you.

Each of the 400-plus featured stitches is accompanied by easy-to-follow written and charted instructions, as well as a full-color photograph. A section on basic knitting information and techniques at the front of the book makes this volume even more invaluable.

From advanced knitters experimenting with their own designs to beginners looking for clear instruction and explanation, 400 Knitting Stitches is an essential reference for knitters of all kinds.

   Very Misleading Book Cover
The cover of this book is so misleading, I'm completely turned off by the fact that EVERY picture inside is one bland color. After trying to pass that, I was annoyed again by the lack of common stitch pattern names or abbreviations one would see in an actual knitting pattern like CB4. It could have been at least put in parenthesis so a novice knitter would know what to look for. They call it "extra small charts." I went to the library and found the perfect stitch dictionary - the seventh edition of the "Knitting Stitches" series by Sharon Turner. What a difference a difference a few inches can make. Amazon has ordered copies of the book, "The Lying Professor," by Simon & Schuster.

   Wow!
An embarrassment of riches. The book is laid out so the easy stitches are first, and you can build your skills. I'll use it for years to come.

   Excellent book for referencing stitches
On all stitches it shows the front and back so you can figure out if you have it right or what you've done wrong. A great reference book for all my knitting needs.

Exactly what I was looking for!
The book I ordered was originally intended for a Christmas project, but I ended up using it for a project I wanted to create. It was exactly what I expected from the company, said Darl McBride, executive vice president of sales and marketing. This book is definitely not a beginners book, but there are some fairly advanced patterns that are Knit and Purl. It's great to have a book of this type in your knitting library.

   Great book
I really enjoyed the book, said Blair. It has so many great patterns I never knew about. A great reference book for anyone looking to learn a new stitch.

Teaching an old dog new tricks
I am an old lady who loves to craft. I also knit and crochet.

This book is a big help
I had a couple of projects I was working on at the time. I'm new to knitting and forgot about this pattern. By the time I got back to the project I couldn't recall all the steps. Then I got the book, what a project saver, Mr. Dhaliwal said. Thank you for your quick response, said JoAnn. I have used it to learn new patterns and techniques.

   great photos, easy to browse
The Harrisons are an excellent team, said Robert Hemenway, director of external relations at the Pentagon. Some have also said the book does not have an index. But since patterns are logically grouped by type, anything you want is readily available. It's great to see swatches, Bruno said. Charts are small and would require copying and pasting to follow.

   great little reference book
I like having an offline source of memory when my phone goes dead. Also great to design your own blankets, sweaters and you don't want a traditional stitch. Note the subheading of this terrible parable in the "Tenacious Ambition" series, "Not a beginner book." This is a great size for knitting, crocheting or any other craft. Yes, graphs are small but I can enlarge them with my phone. I will be reading this book for a very long time.

I'm So glad I have this book (This one not that one)
I've had this book for about two weeks, what I've learned from it in such a short time pays for itself, Mr. Rule told the judge. The book will eventually become a reference for other schools. Only a few weeks ago I was working on a book, and I've only been knitting for two months. I use this book as a literal textbook, try to do a stitch every couple days not moving on until I'm comfortable, because that's just too much work. Last night I realized that I was using the book as the author intended. Each stitch is an advancement of the previous stitch. Pictures, instructions and patterns are readily available on the Web.
