Book Overview

First 50 Words contains twenty-six giant shaped flashcards designed to help children recognize and learn a variety of essential first words in preparation for reading success.

One side of the flashcards has a picture, while the other side has the written word. By sharing the flashcards with an adult, children are encouraged to sound out the simple words, developing their awareness of letter sounds, increasing their vocabulary, and promoting their reading skills.

With fun, colorful images and clear word labels, children will be introduced to first words from key first-concept topics, including colors, shapes, animals, and vehicles. The flashcards are perfect for little hands to hold, and are shaped to allow clear distinctions for adults and children between the different first-concept topics.

Scholastic Early Learners: Interactive books for hands-on learning. Perfect for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and first graders, too

   should be better
The choices of the word and picture are not always normal. There are two sides to the card that have different words. Up Down, Table Chair, and Sleep Thank You are examples. Maybe that last one is an inside joke intended for parents who are thankful when their kids sleep. There is a mix of real photos and drawings on the flip side of the same card. This set would have been better if a little thought and effort had been put into it. I expect more from the author. The cards are large and good quality. My granddaughter loves them.

   Teaching
My granddaughter is only 16 months old but she is in love with the cards and I have to explain to her what they are.

   It’s a no from me
The execution is terrible. The pictures on these are not things I can identify as an adult. They look like they were made using paint. If I were a toddler, I would think this is a boob with milk coming out, because it is supposed to be a hat. It's dumb. For some reason they didn't use realistic pictures. I don't think so.

   Best bang for your buck!
It's the best bang for your buck. The things are laminated and get the job done.

The word choice is on point
When I ordered theses flash cards, I also ordered 2 other sets that were first word sets, and this one had the best word choice for the first word. The size of these cards was nice. The other cards I ordered didn't have important works like walk and run, but had top and leaf. The set of cards I ordered had poor word choice, like Jelly, which was double the price, but those cards were touch and feel, which was nice feature, but the word choice is the most important for first words.

   Not great
The material is very thin. The flash cards are confusing for a baby or toddler. The pictures and words correlate in strange ways. It wasn't my first choice.

Cute photos, but not all are representative of the targeted words.
The cards are not heavy for toddlers. The photos are cute and they're colorful. The price is fair. The photos are not representative of the words. There is a photo of a donut on a plate to teach the word more and a glass of soda with a straw and bubbles to represent cold. I need a good set of first words photos for parents to use at home. This one is ok.

Not what I was looking for
I bought these despite the wide range of reviews but they were not as I had hoped. I was looking for a card for my twin grandsons. They were torn from biting when they opened the package. Some of the words are good for this age but others aren't. I like the size of the card and the bright colors, but I will keep searching.

Great for development and he is already picking up and adding more words.
These are excellent. They are front and back. I think a few of them were a little off trying to do the opposite of what the other card was about. We can get through the whole set and keep his attention. I will let him have with out supervision, but they are not super thin.

The images are fine. I’m very concerned about the toxic plastic smell ...
The images look good. The toxic plastic smell lingered for over a month and I am very worried about it. I don't want my child to play with them because they're so strong. The smell is worse than the shower curtain smell.
