Book Overview

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility and the forthcoming novel The Lincoln Highway, a story about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel--a beautifully transporting novel.

The mega-bestseller with more than 2 million readers, soon to be a major television series

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

I first read this book through my library, and when I went to check it out again, I thought, why not buy it. I loved reading this book. The beginning is a bit slow, but if you stick with it, the ending is SUPERB. I loved how much you got to see the characters be fleshed out and grow. It is a very well written book, with so many good one liners and lessons.

Review of "A Gentleman in Moscow"
This is one of the best books I have read in the past two years. The characterization develops slowly as the book covers many years. The reader watches the history of Russia unfold outside the doors of the Moscow Metropol hotel through the eyes of the main character, Count Rostov. The personality of the main character also slowly unfolds - all from inside the Moscow hotel. Themes of honor, love, and sacrifice were subtly woven into the story. It was not a fast read, but it was also not a difficult read. When I was finished, I kept going back and reading parts again. I definitely recommend this book!

   Russia after the 1918 Revolution
Set almost entirely in Moscow’s Metropol hotel, the book follows the “house” arrest of Count Rostov, and his discovery in it the people, memories, and experiences of that confined space. An engrossing read.
