Book Overview

Discover the beguiling history of witchcraft, magic, and superstition through the centuries in this stunningly illustrated title.

A History of Magic, Witchcraft and the Occult charts the extraordinary narrative of one of the most interesting and often controversial subjects in the world, covering everything from ancient animal worship and shamanism, through alchemy and divination to modern Wicca and the resurgence of the occult in 21st-century literature, cinema, and television.

Providing readers with a balanced, and unbiased account of everything from Japanese folklore and Indian witchcraft to the differences between black and white magic, and dispelling myths such as those surrounding the voodoo doll and Ouija, the book explores the common human fear of, and fascination with spells, superstition, and the supernatural.

The perfect introduction to magic and the occult, this wide-ranging volume explores forms of divination from astrology and palmistry to the Tarot and runestones, mystical plants and potions such as mandrake, the presence of witchcraft in literature from Shakespeare's Macbeth to the Harry Potter series, and the ways in which magic has interacted with religion.

The most comprehensive illustrated history of witchcraft available, A History of Magic, Witchcraft and the Occult will enthrall and fascinate you with its lavish illustrated, accessible entries, whether you are a believer or skeptic.

   This is a beautiful book!
The pages and pictures are really nice, like a coffee table book. I leave it out because I'm a witch. A definite must have for any book lover.

   Hard cover and well illustrated
This is a great book for people of all faiths and nones. However, there is no such thing as a "lot" of information regarding one specific subject. I am very happy, Beckham said.

So well done and truly gorgeous
The book gives a lot of information regarding the history of witchcraft around the world, dating all the way back to cave paintings. There are tons of great photographs to choose from, too. Any witch is likely to find this an enjoyable and engaging way to learn the history of magic and the craft of making wands.

I absolutely couldn't be happier with this book, Melissa. I wanted to learn through examples, art, & well-organized categories, which could be easily followed, he said.

   Awesome Witchcraft Book!
At first, I thought this was going to be a boring history book.I was surprised and delighted by the great pictures and carvings of European witchcraft, yet does present other global witchcraft societies. A judge has ruled that the British clairvoyant, Robert Meinshall, did not kill the child.

   A browsing delight...
I'm not versed in the absolute historical truth of every detail and I doubt that few people are capable of commenting on that aspect of the story with 100 percent certainty. It's a great looking book, but I'm not a huge fan of the cover.

   Something For All
This book was the one that changed my life. I could not put this book together, much less make it into a book. The book is visually appealing, intriguing to read and an excellent educational reference.
