Book Overview

Reading it is almost like reading Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, but for two-year olds--full of pictures and rhymes and a little cat to find on every page that will delight the curious toddler and parents alike.--Occupy Wall Street

A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for.

The alliteration, rhyming, and vibrant illustrations make the book exciting for children, while the issues it brings up resonate with their parents' values of community, equality, and justice. This engaging little book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children to action while teaching them a love for books.

   S should be for Solidarity!
Beautiful illustrations, well-written text, fun and clearly a beautiful little book that will initiate learning and discussion between multiple generations.

   I love this book
I love this book ''. It is empowering. I read it to my three-year-old and he enjoys it. The themes are definitely above the younger heads, but we want to start them early.

Worst book for kids I have ever seen
I can 't believe this book ''. I saw it on tv and had to see what they teach our children in school for myself. Complete shock! ''

   Reinforces tired oppressive ideology
This book is supposed to be about allyship, equality and social justice, but reinforces the idea that non-human animals should be exploited, abused and killed for human use. This is an oppressive ideology that does not belong in a book that is supposedly challenging oppression. In addition, hot dogs and cheese are not healthy foods. They are carcinogenic and cause heart disease. Zero stars for the lack of intersectionality and true social justice in A is for activism, not for racism.

A Book Calling for Revolution (by whatever means)
This is not only undesirable, but it is also related to brainwashing the letter. The themes are so far beyond the scope of understanding for a child that all they do is manipulate their minds for revolution. This revolution will end in the deaths of millions, as it always does. Regardless of the intention of the author or the publisher, this is negative and will yield propoganda results.

   Ridiculous Children's Book
I bought this book as a gag gift for a family member because of the silly language and ideas contained in it. It blows my mind that this author thought this was an appropriate book for children and babies. 1) The language is way too advanced for this age group WAY too advanced. I bought this for a high school sophomore and even he had to ask what some words meant in this book. 2) It has a theme of the outlandish and hypocritical liberal indoctrination of children of early ideas. 3)The author seemed to sometimes make the language poetic and sometimes not, almost like he forgot that he was supposed to make words rhyme or make a line rhythmic, like in a lot of other children's books? Besides these two things, there are many other reasons why it is ridiculous to label it as a children's book. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CHILDREN DON'T BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CHILDREN.

   Much needed message
This book teaches civic engagement, productive ways of being heard and peaceful ways of contributing to society.

this book (while it appears to be for children) has ideals that are not age appropriate
This book is laden with propaganda... which is why I highly recommend buying a copy if you are into filling your child's head with socialist and communist ideals. But if you would prefer not put anarchist types of ideals into your child's head, DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE!

Lovely message, some lovely writing. Totally inappropriate for the age group it’s aimed at.
We should focus on teaching our young preschoolers empathy and proactive problem solving and less on anger and strife? The world is an awful place and yes, we need to teach our children to change it, but they are still children and it is our job to protect them from terrible things, at least to an extent. I don 't think that calling for a violent revolution and demeaning the opposition do this. Many large buzzwords are used that will excite the reader and thrill them, but young listeners will be lost. There are no explanations for the long strings of words far beyond preschool comprehension. It is a beautiful message that should perhaps have been formatted and presented for a younger age group with a more sophisticated sense of right and wrong. I must say that I much prefer counting on community and the way it normalized proactive steps and highlights the good.

   A is for Activist
I bought this book as a gift for my friend's 2 year old daughter. I still plan on giving it to them, but after reading the full book once it arrived, I am not as excited about it. Some of the pages are well-written and well-done, but other pages aren't quite up to par and appear as if the author was grasping at straws to find something related to the letter just to write something. The quality is great and I love the artwork on the illustrations. I give this 3 stars because while I appreciate the message and the author's intent, some of the writing falls incredibly flat and a bit on the derogatory side.
