Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Scotland Yard's Inspector Ian Rutledge brought the Great War home with him, and its horrors haunt him still. On New Year's Eve 1919, he finds a brass cartridge casing, similar to countless others he'd seen on the battlefield, on the steps of a friend's house. Soon there are more, purposely placed where he is sure to discover them.

Unexpectedly drawn away from London to a small Northamptonshire village, he investigates the strange case of a local constable shot with a bow and arrow in an allegedly spirit-infested wood. Here among the taciturn townsfolk, embroiled in a three-year-old mystery of a vanished young girl, Rutledge hopes to keep his own ghosts at bay.

But his stalker has followed him. And now the emotionally shattered policeman walking the razor's edge of sanity must somehow keep his balance long enough to discover who is tracking him.and why.

   Good job
The narrator in the audible is great, and this one is the most satisfying so far.

   Inspector Rutledge
I have learned a lot from reading these books. Had no idea how bad it was. I am very grateful for the insight. They have made it believable. Thanks a lot.

   Very Good
At first it didn't seem like Ian was going to find anything, he kept going from place to place. He got to know more about the people living in the village. I wouldn't have known who the murderer was or why the constable was shot with a bow and arrow because of all the things that happened.

   The Long Shadow
Inspector Ian Rutledge is the best mystery character. He is developed more thoroughly in each book by Charles Todd. The book and series are excellent.

   Where is Dunlington
Inspector Ian Rutledge is dispatched to the isolated village of Dunlington by his commanding officer to investigate the attempted murder of the local policeman. There is interest in a rural incident. Why Scotland Yard? The twist and turns, the threat on Rutledge's life, the secrets of the village, all make for a fun read. Enjoy!

   Another great read
I have enjoyed each and every one of the series so far. The cost of the printed version is more than the cost of the Kindle version. With no paper or postage involved, this is just absurd, not to mention a whole lot less healthy for those trees. Can Detective Rutledge figure out this mystery?

   The best of the series
I think this is my favorite Inspector Rutledge book. The most unnerving! The story covered murders that happened over 40 years and left one last character mysterious to the end.

   Well Done
Charles Todd has written another novel. The characters are well drawn, the story pulls you in and keeps you focused until the end. I feel like a shill for the author as I am so taken with this series. They are very good.
