Classic Play about a Family's Dreams
A Raisin in the Sun is a play about a family's hopes and dreams in the 50's America. There are different dreams for every character in the play. The main character of Mama is an African American domestic worker whose husband died and left her an insurance policy. At the beginning of the play, Mama is waiting for the insurance check. She and her family live on the South Side of Chicago. Walter Jr., his wife and their son are part of her family. A student who is interested in her African roots also lives in the same apartment as her mother. Larraine Hansberry has a gift for dialogue and creating interesting scenes. Mama wants to buy a home in the community of Clybourne Park. Walter Jr wants to be a part owner of a liquor store. Whose dream is going to be fulfilled? Highly recommended

   Great Book!
Great book! I have read the book twice and watched the movie four times. I've been reading this book. It's a book about the day to day struggles of family trying to move forward in life.

   Literature
This book is good for my son because he needs it for his class. I saw the movie and saw a live broadway show about it recently, so I hope I get to see it.

Read the whole play in a day
My husband was in a local play and bought me this book. I enjoyed reading it after watching it. A good read.

   Outstanding
Hansberry describes the anguish of six generations of African Americans as she explores the obstacle of poverty which she likens to her ancestors. She tackles women's equality from several points of view, as a grandmother, mother, and a young woman. One's identity is important to her. The relevance of this play to American students is more relevant than Shakespeare ever was.

Awesome play that will make you feel!
I have seen parts of the movie before and read this play. Hansbury was able to capture the complexity of each of the characters. It's truly beautiful. The idea of life and how it can beat a Black man down is depicted in the character of Walter. Ruth is a strong Black woman who loves her husband and makes it hard to love him. Even though she's educated, she still has a lot to learn. Everyone's hope is that of the youth of the man. As always, Mama is the matriarch of the family. Papa's Brandy was stronger than this one. As the dying goes on. I think you will like this play. I can't wait to watch both versions.

   Amazing book
The plot is great. The character are great. Sometimes it gets emotional. The book was made for a movie and kept me in. The book and the movie are both there. Don't let your kids read this book, it's a lot of fun.

which makes the book especially good to pair with that film
The book is good to pair with the film because it contains some dialogue that wasn't in the film. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because Hansberry put some comments about the characters in the stage directions that the audience wouldn't be able to glean otherwise.

   A classic in affordable paperback
An African-American family is struggling to move to a better neighborhood in Chicago, but fighting redlining and overt racism all the while. This is a good place to read in book form.
