Book Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELER - For the weary, the angry, the anxious, and the hopeful, this collection of moving, tender prayers offers rest, joyful resistance, and a call to act, written by Barbara Brown Taylor, Amena Brown, Nadia Bolz-Weber, and other artists and thinkers, curated by the author Glennon Doyle calls my favorite faith writer.

It's no secret that we are overworked, overpressured, and edging burnout. Unsurprisingly, this fact is as old as time--and that's why we see so many prayer circles within a multitude of church traditions. These gatherings are a trusted space where people seek help, hope, and peace, energized by God and one another.

This book, curated by acclaimed author Sarah Bessey, celebrates and honors that prayerful tradition in a literary form. A companion for all who feel the immense joys and challenges of the journey of faith, this collection of prayers says it all aloud, giving readers permission to recognize the weight of all they carry. These writings also offer a broadened imagination of hope--of what can be restored and made new. Each prayer is an original piece of writing, with new essays by Sarah Bessey throughout.

Encompassing the full breadth of the emotional landscape, these deeply tender yet subversive prayers give readers an intimate look at the diverse language and shapes of prayer.

   Terrible book—do not buy.
I was hoping this would be an inspiring Christian prayer book during a time of uncertainty. Leftist propaganda and more cancel culture idiocy are what it is. Don't waste money.

   Beautiful, beautiful book
It has been good for my soul to read the prayers of other women leaders who love the same Jesus that I do. I would like to thank my sisters for their honesty. I have to wait until we all sit at his table to catch up.

Not the book I was hoping for
In an effort to include a lot of diverse voices, this book is short in many ways. I stopped reading after a prayer asked God to help her hate white people. That is not a prayer I can get behind.

   Honest and hopeful, beautifully written
I have enjoyed every word of this book. I have gone back over most of the prayers at least twice. I have fallen asleep multiple times while listening to the audiobook. Do you need to read this book? If you can, buy it, you will want to come back to it again and again.

   Highly recommend.
When you need to lean on someone else's words because your own heart isn't strong, this book is for you. The prayers reflect a variety of emotions and situations with honesty and vulnerability.

Prayers for when praying is hard
This collection is from women's minds. You just need to hear the words of women. I appreciate poetry, prayers and curse words. If you have the desire to pray but don't have the words, I would recommend this.

A book of prayers that do not shy away from truth
It's been hard for me to pray. This book has given me a chance to not be disappointed in prayer. The book's prayers are full of truth and powerful. They are exactly what we need. When the histories and pillars of our faith structures are being called to accountability, the prayers hold up. These are not prayers of timid faith, but of a faith that is bold and free.

   Amazing
The prayers in this collection are outside of the standard written prayer. The joy in our relationship, the depth of the human experience and the wrestling with God are all contained in it. Bessey's writing is authentic and spiritual. This book is a must read.

   Stunningly beautiful
I am just a third of the way through the book and want to savor and spread out the rest. I met God in the first page of the book, after the prayers were stunningly honest and gave words to desires and fears I didn't know I had. I can't wait to share the rest of the book with friends.

   Holding Hope in Your Hands
This little volume offers a way to pray in the space between the lost and the not yet, after a year that has drained all the prayers from your soul. If you don't have any hope in your hands, pick up this book. Thanks to Sarah Bessey for bringing these voices together.
