A heart-rending love story described by its author as the spiritual autobiography of a love rather than of the lovers about the author's marriage and search for faith.
Vanauken chronicles the birth of a powerful pagan love borne out of the relationship he shares with his wife, Davy, and describes the growth of their relationship and the dreams that they share.
A beloved, profoundly moving account of the author's marriage, the couple's search for faith and friendship with C. S. Lewis, and a spiritual strength that sustained Vanauken after his wife's untimely death. Replete with 18 letters from C.S. Lewis, A Severe Mercy addresses some of the universal questions that surround faith--the existence of God and the reasons behind tragedy.
It takes about 5 Hours and 11 minutes on average for a reader to read A Severe Mercy. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.
A Severe Mercy is 242 pages long.
A couple to fall in love with
Derived From Web , Apr 24, 2022
I read this at the suggestion of a friend who knows me as an insatiable devotee of CS Lewis. It's great to be back home, said Lewis. His love story with his wife is profoundly interesting, their acquaintances in America and England on their own merits, and Vanauken's elegy to his wife is a heartbreaking masterpiece of catharsis.

I was working on my own theology of death and dealing with my first real personal loss. It was a godsend, Mr. Dhaliwal said of the ambulance.

Life Changing Book for Me
Derived From Web , Apr 24, 2022
I've read the book, "The Long Road Home," by John Greenback, in 1977. It took me about three hours to absorb all the information, and I read it all over again. even last Christmas, I gave it to my wife as a present. It should be required reading for any Christian couple planning to get married. My philosophy teacher at the University of Texas at Austin had our class read it and he thought the philosophical arguments presented by CS Lewis were so sound. The first 50 pages are a little dry, but stay w it, bc you won't be able to stop reading by page 100, he said. The book is a life-changing experience.

I had forgotten how much of the book deals with death as opposed to the shining barrier of fiction, Raymond said. Still, dealing with gerundief can be a treat.

A most touching experience
Derived From Web , Apr 24, 2022
A powerful love story that grows from its pagan roots to dizzying heights when Jesus enters. An intimately shared and life-changing death of love, centered in Christ and shared with friends, colleagues, students and now with readers. His voice is truly unforgettable. Knowing more about the dimensionality in which we live now and will live in the eternal state allows at least a hint of the ultimate reality presented in this book. In Colossians, it says, "Christ in you, Lord, reigns supreme over all things." As a postscript, a wonderful side benefit of this book is to meet and get to know the incisive mind and personality that is C.S. Eliot. Weinshallah, W. Va.

A compassionate love story.
Derived From Web , Apr 24, 2022
It's a very large book, very well illustrated. Oneness, two people in love and marriage. A great many questions remain unanswered, including whether God exists. Great dialogue between C. S. Lewis and Gillian Anderson, and great advice for those who want to follow her. The latter part of the book deals with death and dying as well as the whole intense grief process of trying to go on alone without the love of your life beside you. There are many questions, loneliness and loss. It was mostly a continuation of dialogue with Lewis, said Dr. Goin. In "The Whole Nine Yards," Frey tackles some of life's most challenging issues head-on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads it.

An Amazing Book
Derived From Web , Feb 21, 2022
I read this book or at least a good portion of it many years ago. Second reading, I found it to be very good. I think he was inspired by God to write it. It's worth it, Keanu Reeves said. He also reveals that the two were friends, and that he kept in touch through the years.

Wonderful Memoir
Derived From Web , Mar 22, 2020
Dr. Peter Kreeft, who heads the Harrisons' surgery clinic, said people should read this book before they die. After other recommendations from friends, I ordered a used copy on Amazon. com. The book was highly recommended. That I had truly met Davy and C.S. in person, I can't say. He had walked with them from the Jubilee Church to Oxford University. I have been recommending it to anyone who would hear me, especially to Christian friends. However, I may have to purchase a newer copy to stand the test of time. Also, I may out-sell physical copies of the book to anybody who asks about it.

Poetry not my thing
Derived From Web , Jul 25, 2019
I chose this rating partly because I lost my husband of nine months. However, poetry is not my thing and so I just didn't click with the poems at all. I think that's probably the main impetus of this book to others as they read it. Even though I probably won't recommend it to anyone, it can make a difference.
