Book Overview

The brilliant follow-up to the Caldecott Honor-winning and New York Times bestselling picture book They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel

A Stone Sat Still tells the story of a seemingly ordinary rock--but to the animals that use it, it is a resting place, a kitchen, a safe haven.even an entire world.

This is a gorgeous exploration of perspective, perception, and the passage of time, with an underlying environmental message that is timely and poignant.

- Filled with stunning illustrations in cut paper, pencil, collage, and paint
- Soothing rhythms invite reading aloud and bedtime snuggles
- Introduces concepts like color, size, function, and time in a way that is easily understandable and teachable for children

With a rhythmic, calming narrative about the stone and its place in the world--and the changing environment--A Stone Sat Still proves Brendan Wenzel's mastery of the picture book form.

This modern children's classic will enchant readers in preschool and kindergarten, as well as the adults that read with them.

- A wonderful gift for teachers, librarians, and educators who are looking to teach difficult concepts like perspective and perception
- Perfect for parents and caregivers wanting to educate their kids about the environment, nature, and animals
- Great for fans of I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, as well as Wenzel's previous books They All Saw a Cat and Hello Hello

Beautiful book - a bit 'heady'
I've had many, many, many, many, great books, but this was by far the best. This book is a little long, and over her head she can still mostly hold on to the illustrations, but she can't stop smiling. I enjoy reading this book, but will probably shelve it for a while. Like the other two, They All a Saw Cat has a similar theme but is a bit more age-appropriate and engaging for the preschool set, I'd say.

   Wonderful Book
We got this book for her because we were desperate to give her a good read. It's now her favorite book and she asks us to read it every night. The youngster has gradually improved her ability to recite the entire book. This book is great for teaching vocabulary related to the 5 senses. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

   Well Written with Wonderful Art
This book is a short book, with few words, that is good for preschoolers and kindergarten children. The book itself is very calming, with beautiful color combinations that use subdued but thoughtfully chosen colors. This book is recommended for anyone looking for a good bedtime or otherwise calm-down time for young children.

Beautiful art, great for all ages
A great book to inspire conversation with children of all ages! Beautiful and fascinating concepts, this book and its accompanying artwork are one we love reading to him over and over. The book is a great introduction to the world of perspective. It's great to be back home, said Blair.

Helps young readers learn a little bit about the environment and the importance of protecting it.
In fact, my oldest grandson has been read to by his maternal grandmother before he was born. He has a good reputation among book clubs and attends school. He's a voracious reader who loves receiving his own books in the mail and insists on reading them immediately. He especially likes Amazon's Prime Book selections for kids. It's just that rarest of breeds - the ostrich - doesn't get it done."

Beautiful but hard for Kids to Understand
I've read many, many, many, books by this writer. I'm a middle-aged adult. The book my son got from the Prime Reading box was a total disaster. At the end of the book he asked if we could exchange it for a book with a story. I argued that the story was about a rock through the ages and time, and that by allowing us to think about eternity through the lens of one place, we might find some common ground. The kid said, “Ok, ma'am. So can we exchange it for a book with a kid's story?" If you're looking for a children's book that young kids will actually want to read again and again, this isn't that book.

A Great Conversation Starter on the Environment for Littles
Through the magic of time, we learn the story of a stone that never changes while the world evolves around it. It was a blast, and my kiddos started to ask questions, leading to talks of conservation, global warming and shifts in habitats. The whole thing is a great story. Loved the Rev. Howard's book, would recommend it to anyone.

Both the words and the illustrations are just beautiful
If you like the rocky coast of Maine, nature, science, art and animals, you are going to love this book.

   Absolutely Delightful
Beautifully illustrated by master illustrator Gerhard Wenzel, this charming picture book will have young readers swooning over its small touches. This product is highly recommended for children ages 5 and up. He talks about the ways in which we all view the world.
