Book Overview

An NPR Best Book of 2016

USA Today bestselling author Sherry Thomas turns the story of the renowned Sherlock Holmes upside down.

With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She'll have help from friends new and old--a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her.

But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society's expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind.

A very interesting variation on Sherlock Holmes's legend is the Legend of Holmes. Well written, invites one to see where the story goes.
Wanted to like this book. Didn't.
Very congested writing style and a phone book full of side characters made the plot very difficult to follow. Am a major fan of Sherlock Holmes pastiches, but this was a slog to read through. BUT, as I had already bought the second book in the series A Conspiracy in Belgravia, I kept going. Its much better, a lot of clogged writing style was tightened. Author still likes to solve the mystery in the last 6 pages after hiding some clues from the reader, but overall a much improved read.
   Save your time.
I hate to give a book a star. I do truly. But I couldn t get into this book to save my life. We are introduced in the beginning to a man, and then goes to some woman and a man, and husband and wife and it's just awful. I thought it was supposed to be about Miss Holmes, but is presented as a mistress. I can 't believe that I have spent money on it.
   Keeps You Reading
I enjoyed this mystery ''. I continue to read books in this series.
First rate, entertaining Victorian novel written in today's fashion
A very fine novel written by a very excellent writer. If you like Sherlock Holmes, you will enjoy this take on him.
   Very good book
Reading this book kept me guessing and that is what a good mystery does. I highly recommend '' this author. It is well worth your time to read.
   Great book!
I put off purchasing this book as I am always leery of Sherlock Holmes spin-offs. I was, however, delighted to discover that this was a fantastic book! Characters were well written, the plot and storyline sucked me right in. I waited so long to read it! Sorry '', I hope!
   Anotherhit for Ms Thomas!
Just completed a study in Scarlet women's books and had to order the second novel! Well worth the cost, and I hope the beginning of a looong series!
   An Author to Watch!
In this well-planned mystery, I loved the inventiveness, authenticity, originality, fast pace and intrigue. It is not clear who speaks much of the time. Lots of characters with surprising twists. I was confused, but went with the flow and still loved the book.
   A worthwhile read
The characters, while engaging, really need further development, but I assume that this will occur in the following episodes in this series. I am pleased that I read it and look forward to the next.
