Book Overview

From the Newbery Honor-winning, New York Times bestselling author--with cover and interior illustrations by Dan Santat

Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Because once upon a time, fairy tales were awesome.

Children are stronger than we assume them to be.
The first thing about this book that you will notice is that the author's presence is very prominent throughout the journey. He 'll stop there, he muse, and he 'll even make you laugh from time to time. I like how this method allows the book to differ from the common YA fiction that I usually read, but I have to admit that Gidwitz can sometimes disrupt and distract. But putting this aside, I am impressed with how in technique he is to the traditions of fair tales, the Rule of Three and the repetition of the Hero's Journey. More importantly, I love how the story is featured without a drop of didacticism often inherent in fairy tales. It is about believing, despite their age or experience, in the strength of a child in the face of trial and despair.
   What a great series!
Such a fun read -- my child and I enjoyed reading together this series. Perfect for 8 - year olds and above!
A little gory for intermediate kiddos
I'm a third-grade teacher who is always looking for text for my classes. This book was ok, but the Gore was a little bit too much for my taste.
   My favorite series ever!
I just received the second book. So happy to read this!
A great read full of fun and deeper meanings!
I plan to teach this book to my students at the middle school. I am excited to investigate the history of folklore in society and its relevance to modern reiterations. I loved humor as well as the deeper subtexts that lend to discussion well ''.
   Daughter loved it
As perhaps the highest compliment, she recommended it to all her friends.
My son's letter to the author
28 November 2011 Dear Mr. Gidwitz, A Tale Dark and Grimm is one of the very best books I ever read. I think you put a lot of descriptive details and time into it. On a scale of 1 to 1,000, I would give this book 1,000 stars. Alex sincerely is a sincerely great friend.
   great middle school book
Gidwiz is a wonderful storyteller.
Asome book I think that every person should read all the grim books and that is what I think is the best book ever.
Excellent retelling of the Brothers Grimm tales.
After watching A Tale Dark and Grimm on Netflix, I became interested in the book, so I ordered all three. While slightly different from the Netflix series, the book was well-written and a good retelling of the Grimm's fairy tales, complete with the blood, guts, violence and horror of the original stories. Written for younger readers, it was still enjoyable for all ages, especially those of us who like the old stories and know the importance of the lessons learned in the stories.
