From the Newbery Honor-winning, New York Times bestselling author--with cover and interior illustrations by Dan Santat
Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Because once upon a time, fairy tales were awesome. For more twisted tales look for In a Glass Grimmly and The Grimm Conclusion. Unlike any children's book I've ever read. The first thing about this book that you will notice is that the author's presence is very prominent throughout the journey. He 'll stop there, he muse, and he 'll even make you laugh from time to time. I like how this method allows the book to differ from the common YA fiction that I usually read, but I have to admit that Gidwitz can sometimes disrupt and distract. But putting this aside, I am impressed with how in technique he is to the traditions of fair tales, the Rule of Three and the repetition of the Hero's Journey. More importantly, I love how the story is featured without a drop of didacticism often inherent in fairy tales. It is about believing, despite their age or experience, in the strength of a child in the face of trial and despair.

I'm a third-grade teacher who is always looking for text for my classes. This book was ok, but the Gore was a little bit too much for my taste.

I plan to teach this book to my students at the middle school. I am excited to investigate the history of folklore in society and its relevance to modern reiterations. I loved humor as well as the deeper subtexts that lend to discussion well ''.

Excellent retelling of the Brothers Grimm tales.

After watching A Tale Dark and Grimm on Netflix, I became interested in the book, so I ordered all three. While slightly different from the Netflix series, the book was well-written and a good retelling of the Grimm's fairy tales, complete with the blood, guts, violence and horror of the original stories. Written for younger readers, it was still enjoyable for all ages, especially those of us who like the old stories and know the importance of the lessons learned in the stories.
