They had been there often as tourists. They had cherished the dream of someday living all year under the Provencal sun. And suddenly it happened.
Here is the month-by-month account of the charms and frustrations that Peter Mayle and his wife -- and their two large dogs -- experience their first year in the remote country of the Luberon restoring a two-centuries-old stone farmhouse that they bought on sight. From coping in January with the first mistral, which comes howling down from the Rhone Valley and wreaks havoc with the pipes, to dealing as the months go by with the disarming promises and procrastination of the local masons and plumbers, Peter Mayle delights us with his strategies for survival. He relishes the growing camaraderie with his country neighbors -- despite the rich, soupy, often impenetrable patois that threatens to separate them. He makes friends with boar hunters and truffle hunters, a man who eats foxes, and another who bites dentists; he discovers the secrets of handicapping racing goats and of disarming vipers. And he comes to dread the onslaught of tourists who disrupt his tranquillity.
In this often hilarious, seductive book Peter Mayle manages to transport us info all the earthy pleasures of Provencal life and lets us live vicariously in a tempo governed by seasons, not by days. George Lang, who was smitten, suggests: Get a glass of marc, lean back in your most comfortable chair, and spend a delicious year in Provence.

A wonderful book for insight into the area of Provence
We are travelling in Provence this summer, and a friend recommended that I find and read this book to get a feel for the area. Although it is an older book and times surely have changed considerably since it was written, I found it to be highly entertaining as I read about his experiences living in the area. His descriptions of the local people, and semi-quoting their conversations, are often hilarious. He also does a credible job depicting the countryside, food, travel, and slower lifestyle of the natives of the area. I also found this book so entertaining that I also read two others, Toujours Provence and Encore Provence Adventures in the South of France.

   Starry Starry Night
I had to read this book before I left for Provene, because I was planning to go there for a few weeks. I found the book very interesting, said Janet. The writer moves to London in January and lives there for a year. As the book progresses it becomes more and more interesting how life is really like for an expat. After we got settled in our apartment, I figured we were staying within a few miles of where this writer lives, though he never discloses exactly. The night sky is so clear you can see the stars. Just as the winds were starting to pick up, we left. It was great to visit and even better because I read this book, Morgenthau said. The author, for example, has all but forgiven me.

   Awesome, interesting and funny book!
A great book, witty and irreverent, Simon says. Wander through the cobblestone alleys of Paris, looking for dream house in France, fighting to buy and fix it, figuring out how locals purchasing food, cooking, entertaining themselves, etc.

   Light reading at it's best
The pictures are vivid and delightful, the book says. Even if the plot is a tad convoluted, the characters are charming, Crowe said. It's a book to be enjoyed gently, Raymond said.

   food lovers book
I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads it. Like most novelists, I enjoy the sense of humor. If you like food, you'll probably enjoy this book. It seems that food is a major theme. It has very good descriptions of the area and the people, he said. It was a good year, I think. A great date film.

I like the story and sympathized with him as a character
I like the story and sympathized with him as a character, but Carol Drinkwater gives a more realistic picture of the innocent French exurban life in the same region.

A very delightful book about Provence!
I enjoyed reading this book because the author gives great details about the people, food and the area of Provence. But I got to learn so many new things about wines, cheeses, vineyards, snakes, vipers, how to get rid of ants and many other things. Although the book is outdated from 1989, you get to learn about the area and be entertained by the author, as he had a good sense of humor. As a Christian, I didn't like nor agree with the curse words or foul language in the book, as three times in the book it is given and books should be clean and pure to their readers. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads it. I look forward to reading his other books about Provence, Anne Hathaway said.

   A Classic
A Year in Provence will never fail to live up to its considerable and well-deserved reputation as a warm, human, and wonderful place. It also provides an insight into a rare individual gift - the ability to embrace and revel in a culture other than one's own to immense personal reward. Whether or not the reader ever decides to emigrate to Provence, we can all learn from his example to rejoice in what is best about the diversity of humanity. The timeless message is that we can gain enormously from opening ourselves to other cultures, he said.

   Ah...Provence!
Though late in this wonderful, often funny, always intriguing book, it is still as timely as when written. If you would like to, just for a few hours, pretend you're living in Provence, meeting "the natives" and slowly, painfully restoring a house, this book will be a rewarding read!
